Lawndale Art Center's The Big Show 2021
“The Big Show 2021 unites 182 artists grouped within communities of art and ideas in eight broad themes: Abstractions, Deferments, Embodiments, Identities, Landscapes, Materialities, Nature, and Resistance. This exhibition reflects the intense experience of the Covid pandemic and the recent political and social turmoil through the eyes of an intersectional group of exceptional artists. During this period of isolation and uncertainty, many artists turned their eyes to the landscape and to nature; others, to the freeing universe of abstraction; others, to embodiments of resistance, grief, or the beauty of others and the self; others, to celebrate and explore their cultural and personal identities; and, finally, some turned to reimagining the objects of daily life. In The Big Show 2021, diverse universes are brought together as communities to celebrate art and life, no longer alone.”
— Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, The Big Show 2021 Juror
Do You Have Wings? was juried into this year's The Big Show.

The Rørpost Collaboration Project
An international art energy collaboration
Opening reception: Saturday, September 10, 2016, 7 - 10 pm
On view: September 10, 2016 - October 30, 2016
The Rørpost Collaboration Project
Our purpose is to bring international artists together using collaborative projects as a pipeline for the flow of creative energy, the development of friendships, and the celebration of the freedom of expression.
We paired 21 Esbjerg artists with 21 Houston artists. Each artist started a work on paper. These works were sent across the Atlantic to be finished by their artistic partner. The work then made a return trip to its creative origin. Each artist subsequently created a new work in response to the experience of the collaboration in a medium of their choice.
There will be four exhibitions, two in Esbjerg and two in Houston. The exhibits will each consist of 42 collaborative paper pieces and 21 individual artist responses.
About the Name "Rørpost"
Rørpost is a pneumatic tube in Danish. In the past pneumatic tubes were used in department stores to make change or exchange paper messages. In this case Rørpost is a metaphor for sending the paper exchange and art ideas across the Atlantic. The verb "Røre" basically means "to touch" when translated from Danish to English.
Rørpost is the first phase of a three phase project:

Rørpost is the first phase of a three phase project:
- Rørpost, the tube, is a fast and free paper exchange. Røre, to touch, is creating art as a result of the collaborative process and the first touch.
- Rørledning, the pipe, has a larger diameter and exchange. Artists will travel to each other’s country to create art and/or exhibit.
- Rørsamling. the joint, is a connection. Artists in other cities will form connections using the Rørpost to Rørledning model.

Kay Sarver's exhibition, Studio Junkies, is a glimpse into the lives of a few Houston area artists, revealing a personal view into their world, each one individual from the next, yet all pushing boundaries, exploring media and often fumbling in the awkward to find their own unique path. Sarver brings artists from her community into the spotlight, to demonstrate the role they play is a vital part of our society. These paintings reflect Sarver’s deep respect and admiration for artists and their creative surroundings.
Artists portrayed in this exhibit: Joe Aker, Andis Applewhite, Trudy Askew, Becky Soria, Renata Lucia, Donna E. Perkins, Michelle O'Michael, Raymond Saucillo, Cary Reeder, Damon Thomas, John Slaby, Joan Son, Kamila Szczesna, Sherry Tseng Hill and me, of course. Here is a link to a catalog I put together of this series and information about each artist.

The International Woman's Foundation located in Building 98 "Hacienda del Arcon"
is a premier training center for artistic development and healthful aging in Marfa, Texas.
Gallery is open weekends and by appointment
596 miles is the distance from Houston to Marfa. Far beyond the horizon’s edge the vista morphs as you travel from the Gulf Coastal Plain, across the Edwards Plateau to the High Desert of the Trans-Pecos in the Basin and Range Province.
It takes time to travel such a distance. You become stretched by looking so far instead of near.
But therein lies the opportunity for discovery. There are those who sight-see and those who travel. To travel is more than seeing sights; to travel is to journey. It is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
In much the same way art has the ability to stretch one’s view, to lead from one point of understanding to another and expand one’s horizon. And in much the same way it takes time, effort and patience to reach one’s destination, to reach one’s potential.
The International Woman’s Foundation in Marfa and The Art Chatter Group of Houston are two organizations separated by a great distance but sharing the common goals to provide a nurturing environment, support the exchange of ideas and dedicated to the artistic development and fulfillment of one’s promise and potential.
It is with great joy and excitement we share our work and efforts with the International Woman’s Foundation in Marfa; to participate together on this journey.

NPR "Houston Matters" Interview
Good show on the difficulties of pursuing an art career on NPR radio show, "Houston Matters", Friday, June 13, 2014 at noon. The show was an hour long, but the first 22 minutes is the interview with us three artists - Richy Levy, Mischa Hutchings and myself. Would love to have seen the entire hour dedicated to this subject, but so enjoyed some coverage for the Houston arts community.

Chinelli La Fratta Gallery presents The Unseen - an exhibition of oil paintings created by artist Kay Sarver. The paintings on wood subtlety explore the often hidden world of immigrants from south of the U.S/Mexican border. They portray individuals working various manual jobs while living in the United States. Taking nothing for granted, most appreciate the opportunity, however small, to earn enough income to not only sustain where they live, but to ultimately send money back to the loved ones they have left behind. This is a true labor of love.
Having been employed in the restaurant industry for a number of years, Sarver found that many of her co-workers were from south of the border. She discovered that they were resilient, hard-working, and often illegal. After hearing their various stories, she realized that her road in life had been paved with prosperous opportunity in comparison to their heart-wrenching journeys.
This series barely scratches the surface of the migrant-worker issue in this country, as it presents this topic through a soft focus lens, encouraging all to see these individuals as worthy of our attention, empathy, and respect.

"With these smaller works of oils on wood and wire pieces, my deep appreciation of the "essence", or the spirit of all things has given new life, or a kind of "cross-pollination" to these larger paintings, which honor our first Mother - the earth. She encompasses our fond appreciation of Nature in her continuous and often unpredictable change."

The Big Show is Lawndale Art Center's annual open-call, juried exhibition. It has been an important venue through which emerging and under-represented Houston area artists gain exposure since the show's conception in 1984. The Big Show was formerly the East End Show, sponsored by the East End Progress Association, at Lawndale's original location.
Each year Lawndale Art Center invites a guest juror to select from work submitted by artists living within 100 miles of Houston. Artists are invited to bring up to three works of art, not previously shown in Houston, to Lawndale Art Center where the work is juried on-site for a chance to be included in the show and a shot at $3,000 in cash awards.
For this year's exhibition, a total of 83 works by 67 artists were selected by juror Duncan Mackenzie, Artist/Critic/Writer and Co-Founder of Bad at Sports, for the exhibition from 922 works submitted by 366 artists. Artists selected for the exhibition include:
Hannah Adams, John Adelman, Alonso Bedolla, Kari Breitigam, Adrian Landon Brooks, Chadwick + Spector, Raina Chamberlain, Perry Chandler, Monica Chhay, JooYoung Choi, K.C. Collins, Felipe Contreras, Terry Crump, Andy Dearwater, Alex Larsen and Alexander DiJulio, Jennifer Ellison, Avril Falgout, Bryan Forrester, Kelli Foster, Caitlin Fredette, Luna Gajdos, Daniela Galindo, Bryan Keith Gardner, Matthew Glover, Nerissa Gomez, David P.
